Netball Tasmania would like to announce, in partnership with Engender Equality, our initiative to raise awareness for the End Domestic Violence Campaign. We feel it is incredibly important to make a stand and start the conversation within sporting communities across Tasmania.
Current statistics in Australia reflect that one woman is killed by a male every 3.5 days in 2024. All of our 7 Tasmanian Netball League Clubs will be wearing purple armbands for the rest of their home and away season, with all netball clubs and associations in Tasmania encourage to follow suit. Purple is the colour of domestic violence awareness. Wearing of armbands in Australian sport to acknowledge the grieving of those that have passed in common place. For this reason the use of armbands has been chosen to recognise those women in Australia that have lost their lives to domestic violence.
Netball Tasmania and Engender Equality will be working together to further educate our TNL clubs and provide support to all our associations and clubs at a community level to facilitate conversations around domestic violence. While we are looking to raise awareness and start a conversation initially, we want to ensure everyone in the netball community in Tasmania is educated and know how to take-action when needed.
