First Nations Tournament History
Netball Australia announced the introduction of a pilot First Nations Tournament that would take place in September 2024, to provide accelerated and equitable opportunities for First Nations participants in netball.
The pilot featured under-23 aged teams from every state and territory across three days of competition.
The inaugural tournament was developed with support from Netball Australia’s eight Member Organisations, aiming to grow the cultural literacy of non-Indigenous people within netball and facilitate our First Nations people to thrive and be celebrated at all levels of the game.
First Nations coaches, umpires and officials from around the country took part in the inaugural event, further showcasing the depth of First Nations talent that exits across the netball landscape.
Following the success of the pilot event in 2024, the First Nations Tournament will return in 2025 as a permanent fixture on the national netball calendar. This marks the next chapter in celebrating and elevating First Nations talent, culture, and community through netball.
Under-23 aged representative teams from every state and territory will feature in the 2025 tournament, including Victoria, ACT, Tasmania, New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
Lutruwita Netball
Netball Tasmania we're thrilled to be a part of the inaugural tournament, and to present the first ever Lutruwita Netball team. The inaugural team was lucky to be under guidance of experienced Head Coach Fiona Geappen, who was invited to attend the First Nations Coaching Course in 2024.
The Lutruwita team will wore dresses featuring a design by local artist, Takira Simon-Brown. "This design has been inspired by pulp of the pigface, scattered about on country glowing under the sunlight" This design will continue to be featured in all Lutruwita Netball activity to come in the future. We cannot thank Takira enough for her beautiful contribution.
