Four outdoor courts at the Kingborough Sports Centre have been given a new lease on life, made possible by a grant from the Tasmania Government. The courts have been resurfaced ready for the 2025 season, with some spring roster games having already been played on the new courts.
The Kingborough Netball Association were the deserving recipients of $40,318 in funding through the State Governments 2024 grants program. The funding was secured solely to cover the much-needed upgrades to existing courts, which posed some safety risks to players.
Netball Tasmania CEO, Mitchell Coulson conveyed the importance of these type of upgrades for facilities like those at the Kingborough Sports Centre.
“As the highest participation sport for females in Tasmania, it is vital we continue to invest and support facility upgrades across the state.
These upgrades will drastically improve the safety of these facilities and enable more young netballers to enjoy high quality courts.”
Nick Duigan, Minister for Sport and Events shared,
“It’s fantastic to see the resurfacing of the four outdoor netball courts at Kingborough have been completed. The Tasmanian Government is committed to improving sporting facilities and infrastructure, like this $40,318 investment, across the State.
We want to see more Tasmanians participating in sport and active recreation. We are investing $86 million over the next four years in more than 100 sporting clubs and community sporting infrastructure projects.
This will support Tasmanians to engage in healthy pursuits and pave the way for increased participation.”
The Kingborough Council contributed equally to the refurbishment of the courts, matching the State Government’s contribution.
Kingborough Council Mayor, Paula Wriedt, welcomed the upgrade of the external netball courts at the Kingborough Sports Centre.
"As a former netball player, I understand the importance of having good playing surfaces.
“These courts were desperately in need of an upgrade, and I'm thrilled to see them revitalised," Cr Wriedt said.
"Netball is the third most popular sport among our young residents in Kingborough, making this improvement highly anticipated and much needed."
In comment from the association, the committee are thankful for the funding that made upgrades possible.
“Kingborough Netball Association has waited a long time for the court resurfacing and is delighted with the outcome - improving safety for all users.
Many thanks must go to Kingborough Council and the State Government for the funding, along with Netball Tasmania for assisting with the application.
KNA looks forward to hosting a range of competitions and training for local and visiting netballers.”
