The South East Suns Opens team is primed for an exciting 2026 season, entering the competition with strong continuity, renewed energy, and a clear determination to build on the foundations that were set last year.
With eight players returning from the previous campaign, the Suns boast a settled core group that understands one another’s game and shares a commitment to each other and the club. That cohesion is expected to be a major asset as the side prepares for what looms as a fiercely competitive season.
The defensive end remains one of the team’s greatest strengths. Maddi Hay, Alanna Cooper and Emilia Kerr return as a strong combination, bringing intensity, composure and experience to the back third. Their ability to apply pressure and create turnover ball has long been a cornerstone of the team.
Adding further firepower to the defensive unit is new recruit Shyan Mackay. Mackay’s speed and athleticism immediately stood out during preseason, and her ability to transition quickly from defence into attack is expected to add another dimension to the Suns’ game. Her arrival strengthens an already imposing defensive structure.
Through the midcourt, the Suns will once again rely on the dynamic pairing of Holly Thomas and Mackenzie Queen. Both players bring relentless work rate and strong decision-making through the centre third, driving the team’s ball movement and linking defence to attack. The return of Karli Wilton adds valuable depth and versatility to the midcourt rotation, giving the Suns additional balance and experience.
In attack, the Suns welcome back the influential Gemma Polley. Her height, strength and leadership provide a commanding presence in the shooting circle, perfectly complementing the speed and agility of Aimee Bean and Ella Booth. The blend of physical presence and quick movement creates a versatile and dangerous scoring unit capable of challenging any opposition defence.
After a demanding preseason built around fitness, connection and accountability, the Suns Opens team enters 2026 confident and well-prepared. With a settled lineup, exciting additions and a unified purpose, the Suns are ready to make their mark and push for a successful season ahead.
