Announcing a Tasmanian State Team is always delivered with a sense of pride and accomplishment, but this time it’s extra special. Not only is it a thrill to recognise the athletes and coaches who have worked tirelessly to earn their spots, it’s the start of a new era. The WILD era.
Tasmania Wild is our states flagship netball team, the current pinnacle of representative action. It is a brand designed to embody Tassie spirit, while reflecting our rugged landscape and unique island edge. The Wild brings together our high potential and strong performing athletes, in alignment with Netball Tasmania’s High Performance strategy. Court craft, physical performance and mental performance are factors taken into account when making selections.
With the average age of the squad (team, reserves and training partners) being just 19 years 6 months, Netball Tasmania are prioritizing the development of a young cohort with enormous potential. Even our youngest team member, Ellie Marshall, brings a wealth of experience from two trips to national pathway camps and her previous leadership positions in underage state teams. Compare that to one of our top age athletes in Shelby Miller who has played in an Australian Netball League winning championship with the Tassie Magpies, and the breadth of experience is vast beyond our average years.
There are many goals for those playing the Tasmanian way, or the Wild way. These are driven by the team and staff, both on and off the court. Process, culture, mindset, wellbeing and accountability are core components of this program that will help drive elite standards and establish new benchmarks for Tasmanian Netball.
Being part of the inaugural Wild team cements the place of these athletes in Tasmanian Netball history. Like the Tassie Spirit or Southern Lights before them, our first Wild team will represent our state with style and pride, while attacking the game with freedom and flair.
The Wild will compete at the upcoming Australian Netball Championships, with the timing and location to be announced by Netball Australia shortly.
