OHA NETBALL CLUB HOSTS AUSTRALIA’S FIRST NETSETGO FOR ADULTS
Hobart adults are being encouraged to don bibs and court shoes and get an introduction to netball.
In an Australian first, Your Path to Health OHA Netball Club is offering NetSetGo sessions for adults in October. NetSetGo is a netball starter program that has been traditionally offered to children aged 5-10 years of age. It encourages participants to build skills, get active and make new friends.
OHA Netball coaches, Ellie O’Brien and Korrin Petrie, conceived of the idea when seeing many parents enjoying the game of netball, but only from the sidelines as their children played.
“We’d encourage parents to come to trials or training,” said Ms O’Brien, “but they’d tell us that they felt too silly because they’d never played or hadn’t played for a long time.”
After seeing the success of the club’s NetSetGo programs in encouraging young people to take up netball, Korrin and Ellie came up with the idea of similar sessions for adults.
“We started looking at how NetSetGo could be tailored for adults, made some enquiries and were eventually invited to a NetSetGo forum in Melbourne to pitch our ideas,” said Ms Petrie. “The forum loved the idea, so with their endorsement and support from the OHA Board, we are now offering adult sessions alongside our NetSetGo program for kids in October.”
The co-coaches hope that the program results in adult players returning to netball or taking it up for the first time, at any age.
Ms O’Brien says, “One thing we know well at OHA, is that you can play netball at any age. One of our players this season is 73 years old and she’s no slouch. In fact, her team went on to win the premiership in their grade this season.”
Ms Petrie believes that the program will generate a lot of interest. “Already from a few facebook posts, we’ve had an amazing response,” she says.
Your Path to Health OHA Netball Club is offering NetSetGo for adults for 8 weeks beginning 23 October. Sessions run 5-6pm and are offered alongside a NetSetGo program for ages 5-11.
