Update from Netball Tasmania
It's exciting to be able to get back to small group outdoor exercise this week, but remember to follow the guidelines! #netballtas #staysafe

Update from Netball Tasmania
Keen to get back to the courts? So are we! The #netballtas team has been working hard on a management plan to get us back out there safely and successfully asap.
For now, we’re working with Sport and Recreation Tasmania to create a staged return to training and competition. On May 28th, we will conduct a review to determine when resumption might be possible, unless professional medical advice allows us to conduct an educated review sooner.
We love hearing about how you #stayhomeworkout; keep up the great efforts. While team Netball training is still suspended in Tasmania, the easing of Covid-19 restrictions may allow you to get some more outdoor physical training in provided you stay safe and within the guidelines!

Statement from Netball Tasmania
Netball Tasmania made the difficult decision on March 13 th 2020 to suspend Netball training and competition in Tasmania due to Covid-19 related risks and restrictions.
A meeting was held on Friday April 17th 2020 to discuss the suspension and to consider a potential date for resumption of competition. Subsequent meetings were held immediately thereafter with Member Associations and RACT Insurance League Clubs.
It was quickly determined that since the March review, further Covid-19 related restrictions have been imposed which effectively remove any discretion as to whether Netball can be played in the current environment.
Netball Tasmania along with our Member Associations and RACTI League Clubs support these restrictions fully and remain committed, as we have been from the beginning, to prioritising the health and safety of not only our participants but also the wider community.
We must however ensure that we find the right balance between maintaining that commitment and being ready to return to the court as soon as it is safe to do so.
Netball Tasmania, Member Associations state-wide, and RACTI League Clubs have collectively and unitedly agreed to set the next review date as Thursday May 28th 2020 and agree that the suspension of all training and competition will remain in place until this date.
This date has been established with a view to work towards potential competition resumption from Wednesday July 1st 2020.
As we’ve said throughout, the Covid-19 pandemic is bigger than sport and when the May 28th review occurs, health and safety will again be prioritised as will be our commitment to supporting and complying with any Government imposed restrictions which remain in place at that time.
In the meantime we must all continue to play our part to best support the broader community, whilst continuing to support each other within the Netball community to ensure that we maintain mental, physical and financial strength required to be ready for a swift and successful return to the court when possible.

SSA announces cancellation of 2020 Championships
March 23, 4:44pm
School Sport Australia (SSA) advises that due to the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent restriction on school sport programs, SSA has cancelled all Championships for 2020. The 15&U Netball Chapionships due to be held in July in Canberra will now not go ahead.
This is in addition to the previous announcement of the cancellation of all Championships that were scheduled to be held between March and May 2020. The sporting Championships list of cancellations is comprehensive, and full details can be found at http://www.schoolsportaustralia.edu.au/blog/2020/03/23/ssa-announces-cancellation-of-2020-championships/.
SSA President Graeme Jennings said “The Board of School Sport Australia is again saddened to add these championships to the list of those we have already cancelled. The Board continues to sympathise with students and teachers as we understand many would have begun preparation for this year’s Championships. However, the safety and welfare of students and teachers plus all other people involved in our championships is paramount to SSA hence the decision to cancel them”.
Mr Jennings went on to say “Like everyone in the community, we hope the restrictions on sporting activities are lifted as soon as possible. We recognise however that this is an issue that may take many months to overcome. A number of member bodies have indicated they will not be in a position to select and prepare teams in 2020 hence the decision to cancel, not postpone, the Championships”.
Statement from Netball Tasmania
March 20, 9:00am
Netball Tasmania has been closely monitoring the evolving landscape of Covid-19 and its impact on sport Nationwide.
Following a review of new information released this week, and discussions with Netball Australia, Netball Tasmania advises that the suspension on Netball in Tasmania will remain in place through until May. Proposed recommencement dates for competition are as follows:
- Community Netball from May 2nd
- Tasmanian Netball League from May 8th.
These proposed recommencement dates have been carefully considered and have been implemented to allow Associations and Clubs to appropriately plan for the impact on their members and their competitions.
It is important to note that the landscape as a result of Covid-19 continues to shift as new information comes to hand daily. Netball Tasmania will continue to monitor updates and new information closely and will meet as a Board on April 17th to determine whether these proposed recommencement dates are still appropriate at that time.
Netball Tasmania is very aware of the impact of the suspension of Netball on our participants, our Clubs and our Associations. We will maintain close contact with Clubs and Member Associations in the coming weeks to support them as best possible, and to partner with them to ensure that our participants remain engaged, prepared and ready for a return to the court as soon as possible.
Covid-19 has had an enormous impact on the community and may continue to for some time yet. Netball Tasmania understands that the impact on community, and the risks presented by the virus, are bigger than sport. We remain committed to ensuring that we are doing the right thing by not only our participants, but the broader Tasmanian community, by playing our part in slowing the spread of infection.
We were decisive and acted quickly to suspend competition when we felt it was necessary, and we will be ready to act quickly again when the time is right for a return to competition.
Suspension of Netball Competition in Tasmania continues
March 17, 11:09am
Netball Tasmania announced on Friday 13 March that all Netball competition in Tasmania would be suspended for 13/14/15 March. This decision was made due to the ever-changing landscape regarding Covid-19, and in order to provide time for Netball Tasmania to consider appropriate risks and controls to ensure that it is both safe and appropriate to continue Netball competition.
The Board of Netball Tasmania met on Sunday 15 March to consider information and guidelines, and to conduct a risk assessment in relation to the impact of Covid-19 on Tasmanian Netball competitions. Whilst controls were identified which may lower the impact of many risks, other risks were considered far more difficult to mitigate to an acceptable level.
As a result of this review process, Netball Tasmania has determined that the suspension of Netball competition in Tasmania will continue. It is very important that the Netball community understands that it is the intent of Netball Tasmania to recommence state-wide competition as soon as possible. This can, however, only occur once Netball Tasmania is satisfied that risks have been lowered to an adequate level to ensure that we are acting in the best interest of participant health and safety. It is equally important that Netball Tasmania plays a responsible role in supporting the broader community by assisting efforts to ‘flatten the curve’ in relation to the spread of Covid-19.
Netball Tasmania will establish a working group which will meet weekly to consider all new information and to determine at what stage risks have been lowered to an acceptable level and a return to competition Netball is appropriate. This group will include representatives of Member Associations and Tasmanian Netball League clubs. By meeting and reviewing updates weekly, Netball Tasmania believes that this provides the greatest opportunity to return to competition as soon as possible. Netball Tasmania will provide further updates to applicable stakeholders should there be a change to status following each weekly review.
Suspension of RACTI TNL and Community Netball for 13-15th March
March 13, 6:14pm
In light of ongoing consultation and advice from applicable bodies in relation to the impact of Covid-19, Netball Tasmania will be suspending all Netball this weekend including both community Netball and the RACT Insurance Tasmanian Netball League.
I wish to assure everyone that this is a decision which has not been made lightly. In light of progressive information and advice however, and with respect to this afternoons Government announcement in relation to public gatherings, we feel that suspending Netball this weekend is in the best interest of our participants, regardless of how disappointed many will be.
We acknowledge that the public gathering ban does not take effect until Monday, and also that the number has been set at 500 which would not necessarily impact all Member Associations and competitions. This isn’t the only consideration however, and it is critical that Netball Tasmania and applicable stakeholders take the time to plan and implement appropriate control measures to ensure that competitions can be conducted in the best interest of participant health and safety, and with respect to appropriate advice and direction.
At this stage, this is a decision relating to this weekend only. Netball Tasmania will take further advice early next week, consult members and relevant stakeholders, and conduct further planning to determine whether, and under what circumstances, Netball competitions may recommence as soon as possible.
In relation to the RACT Insurance Tasmanian Netball League, at this stage matches scheduled to be played this evening will be rescheduled to a suitable time later during the season. Individual Member Associations will no doubt advise in due course as to how this weekends suspended competition will be dealt with from an Association competition perspective.
Netball Tasmania would like to thank all members, participants and stakeholders for their patience and understanding. We are operating in a difficult climate at present, and whilst we wish to minimise disruption to our game and to competitions state-wide, we must ensure that the health and safety of the Netball community is paramount.
