For Will Green, a passion for sport led to an opportunity to learn alongside Netball Tasmania through the Blundstone Tasmania Academy of Leadership in Sport (TALS). With applications open for 2027, more aspiring sports industry professionals can take that first step.
“I chose TALS as a way to get into the sporting industry. It’s something that I love and have been passionate about for years,” Will said.
Through its partnership with Netball Tasmania, TALS connects students with practical experiences that reveal the people, planning and business behind the sport.
Developed in partnership with TasTAFE and delivered by the TALS team, the program combines diplomas in Leadership and Management and Sport, with face-to-face learning in Hobart and Launceston, regular industry speakers and 100 hours of work-integrated learning.
Prospective students and their families are invited to attend an upcoming information event to meet the team and explore the program.

Putting learning into practice
For Will, supporting the opening round of the Tasmanian Netball League at Kingston was a highlight of his experience.
“Working with Netball Tasmania has been great. Working the TNL at the opening round at Kingston was a standout,” he said.

Experiences like these give students the chance to contribute to sporting events while developing their confidence, communication and understanding of how organisations operate.
Netball Tasmania CEO Penny Shearer said Will’s development has extended beyond his knowledge of the game.
“What Will has been able to develop is his ability to ask questions and deliver in a professional way, as well as a bigger understanding of the sport and opening him up to other sides of the business,” she said.
Developing netball’s future workforce
For Netball Tasmania, the partnership is also an opportunity to help develop people who could contribute to the sport in years to come.
“It gives us an opportunity to develop capability and the future workforce for netball,” Shearer said.

By working alongside industry professionals, students can explore different roles, understand workplace expectations and discover where their strengths and interests fit.
For people like Will, it is a chance to turn a long-held interest in sport into practical experience and a clearer career direction.

The program also offers a pathway to further study. Graduates can receive 18 months of credit towards the University of Tasmania’s Bachelor of Business, creating an accelerated pathway from their TALS qualifications to a university degree.
Whether you’re finishing school, considering a career change or looking for a way into the sporting industry, TALS offers an opportunity to explore what comes next.
