Origin Diamonds Legacy Mural Unveiled in Hobart
Netball Australia in conjunction with Netball Tasmania and local artic Joel Gajada have combined to bring to life a representation of Diamonds player & World Cup champion captain Liz Watson, and distinguished Tasmanian Wild player and TNL star, Ash Mawer. They are in the foreground of local iconic features in kunyani/Mount Wellington, the River Derwent and the recognisable shape of Wrest Point Casino in what makes it undoubtedly centred in Hobart.
Painted by Gajada by hand, the piece is set at Hobart Netball and Sports Centre, home of the Southern Tasmanian Netball Association, the states largest netball participation base. The vibrancy and interest in the commissioned artwork will long serve as a showcase of the Diamonds visit to Hobart and how netballers coming through local pathways can aspire to reach the heights of Liz and Ash.
The support of the Tasmanian Government has been integral to completion of the mural, along with a range of other community touch points and activations. The Open Training session at Sorell, the junior clinics in Launceston, and the first game of two at MyState Bank Arena have all been huge success stories and given a real thrill to local fans in gaining an opportunity to engage with sporting royalty in the Origin Australian Diamonds. Sunday’s win over the SPAR South Africa Protea’s reached official sell out status.
