The Tasmanian Magpies recorded their first winless round last weekend, succumbing to the Giants on both Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday saw the two teams clash at Hisense Arena prior to the Suncorp Super Netball double-header, with the Giants coming away with a resounding 23 goal victory over the Magpies.
After producing a six goal lead in their opening half, the Giants were emphatic in their victory, restricting the Pies’ attack to just 11 goals in the second half, whilst recording 28 of their own in their biggest victory of the competition.
Magpies’ Head Coach Jon Fletcher said “what we produced on Saturday was a pretty disappointing effort”.
“We created enough opportunities for ourselves defensively, but were held up in the mid-court and failed to turn those opportunities into scoring options”.
Sunday was a largely similar story for the Pies, with the Giants coming away 20 goal victors after scoring a massive 72 goals for the match.
Introducing Alice Teague-Neeld, Cody Lange and Micaela Wilson to the side wasn’t enough to overcome a strengthened Giants side, which had added Australian Goal Shooter, Kristina Brice to their line-up.
However, the loss wasn’t as disappointing for Fletcher who saw a lot of positives for the side, “we definitely bounced back on the Sunday to produce a much better effort the second time around”.
After being outscored by 10 goals in the second quarter, the Pies managed to bounce back to win the third quarter by 6 goals, and only lose the last half of the match by 1 goal.
“The Giants are a very strong side and I thought we played one of our best games of the season on Sunday, we just weren’t able to capitalise when we needed to”.
The Tasmanian Magpies will travel to Launceston this weekend for their only Tasmanian home game. They will face-off against the Southern Force on Saturday at 5pm and Sunday at 10am at the Silverdome. Tickets are available online and at the door from the Silverdome.
