Despite not knowing what to expect in their inaugural season, the co-affiliated side showed some impressive signs – including defeating Victorian Fury in round one and missing out on the finals by one goal. It was a history best for a Tasmanian side, finishing with seven a piece in the win to loss ratio.
The team is excited and ready for season 2 and is satisfied with their preparations and pre-season.
Final is definitely on the cards for the side.
“The team just missed out on the top four last year and we will be aiming for nothing less” said Assistant Coach Claire Dennis.
Dennis spoke very highly of the affiliated partnership and the cohesion among the group.
“All the girls whether they are based in Tasmania or Victoria embrace the [Tasmanian] name. We refer to ourselves as the Tas Mags and the girls are really proud to wear our map”
The team will play their first two matches this weekend against Western Sting in Perth. Five Tasmanian’s have been named in the travelling squad.
The squad for round 1 and 2 is: Cody Lange, Mary Livesey, Vanessa Augustini, Mel Bragg, Jane Cook, Maddie Carter, Zanna Jodlowska, Sharni Lambden, Shelby Miller, Dannielle Pickett, Kelsie Rainbow and Gabbi Sinclair.

Cody Lange will lead the Tasmanian Magpies this season. Cody was part of the Magpies SSN side last year, but suffered a massive blow, rupturing her ACL for the second time. Lange has been putting in the hard work to be ready for the 2018 ANL season.
Mary Livesey is in her second season with the Tasmanian Magpies. She was a key defensive member of the 2017 squad, which has seen her be rewarded as a 2018 Collingwood Magpies training partner and vice captain of the Tasmanian Magpies.
Vanessa Augustini became the Magpies’ first training partner signature for the 2018 season, which meant the first Tassie Magpie as well. The 23-year-old joins the Magpies setup after representing the Queensland Fusion in the Australian Netball League (ANL) in 2017.
Mel Bragg joins the Magpies and Tasmanian Magpies setup as a training partner for 2018 after two years out of the National League setup. Mel was part of the Victorian Fury in 2014, as well as the premiership side in 2015.
Jane Cook standing at 201cm and one of the tallest in Australian netball is a late but great inclusion into the side. Cook replaces goalie Sam Gooden who was named as a replacement player for the Melbourne Vixens just a couple of weeks ago. Jane has prior experience through Vic Fury and Adelaide Thunderbirds, but will continue her development at the Holden Centre as a Magpies training partner.
Maddie Carter originally from Tasmania represented the Tasmanian Magpies last year, as well as being part of the Tassie Spirit from 2010-2013. Carter played for Cavaliers and Arrows in the Tasmanian State League and after making the move to Melbourne represented the U21 Victorian team in 2014 and has been playing with Melbourne University Lightning.
Zanna Jodlowska returns to the Tasmanian Magpies squad for a second season. She brings a great high intensity to her game with a hard one-on-one style. She also brings fantastic versatility to her game and provides continuous pressure against all players. Back home Zanna is the captain of the Karana Flames in the RACTI League.
Emma Johns a member of the 2017 side offers a strong defensive style. Her solid overshot and tenacious style delivers a fantastic defensive pressure. Emma plays locally with Kingston Blues in the RACTI League.
Sharni Lambden is a dynamic midcourter, who returns to the Tasmanian Magpies having been a part of the 2017 inaugural Squad. She is also excited to have been named a Collingwood Magpies training partner for the 2018 SSN season.
Hannah Lee is a confident shooter, who is excited to unite with the Tasmanian Magpies for the 2018 season. Lee has an amazing ability to read play, resulting in her fantastic timing in leading as well as ability to shoot goals.Originally from Devonport, Hannah now resides in Hobart and represents Karana Flames in the RACTI League.
Shelby Miller is a dynamic mid-courter, who will return to the Tasmanian Magpies Squad having been a part of the team’s inaugural season in 2017. Her exceptional ability to read the play alongside her creative attacking style makes her exciting to watch. She also has a never give up attitude which further displays her passion for the game. Shelby played a season in the VNL last year, but has returned home to Tasmania this season and will front for her beloved Cavaliers.
Kaitlin Petrie is a speedy mid-courter, Kaitlin Petrie looks forward to her first ANL season with the Tasmanian Magpies this year. Petrie provides a hard one-on-one style throughout the mid-court and is quick to lead in attack. Her creative and dynamic style around the ring makes her a standout player. Kaitlin is a key player for the Karana Flames in the RACTI League.
Dannielle Pickett joins the Tasmanian Magpies for the first time, having previously been a Tassie Spirit player. She is a strong-bodied player with a tough one-on-one approach, Pickett brings everything she has to each game. With a fantastic team player attitude, Pickett works well alongside her teammates and ensures everyone is supported on and off the court.
Kelsie Rainbow a former Melbourne Vixens training partner and now Collingwood Magpies training partner provides a speedy and athletic mid-courter who is thrilling to watch. Kelsie grew up in Tasmania, playing with the Cavaliers and worked her way through the pathways, before moving to Melbourne to pursue her ambitions.
Alex Vinen was a part of the Tasmanian Magpies defensive unit in their inaugural season last year. She is a dynamic defender that has excelled in the Tasmanian pathways and is ready to test herself among those at the top of the ranks.
