The final round of the 2025 Tasmanian Netball League season is done and dusted and what a season it has been!
We have wrapped up with two clear ladder leaders, with the Northern Hawks finishing with only one loss in the 19&U’s and the Cavaliers undefeated in the Opens. Despite the clear first place finishers, this season has been the closest in a while with most teams having great wins, close matches, and some tough losses. The highly requested longer season allowed each team to play each other three times, giving plenty of opportunities to try different tactics against each opposition.
The final round had it all, with 2nd and 3rd spot on the 19&U’s ladder to be determined by the final match between Devon and Cripps. It went down to the wire, Cripps were up by 6 at half time but Devon came out fighting in third to even the scores. Cripps scored the last three goals of the last quarter, but it wasn’t quite enough, they lost by 1, 49-50. Devon finished the season in 2ndplace with the double chance, Cripps slipped into 3rd place and Kingston, who had a bye in round 21, finished in 4th.
The Opens match between Devon and Cripps, while not able to impact the ladder, was an important one for Cripps to win heading into their semi-finals next week against the Northern Hawks. It was a seesaw score right up until the last quarter, where Defence Gemma Collyer and attack Tyrah Bacon showed their experience for Devon, eventually locking in the win 46-38. This was our match of the round, congratulations to Tyrah Bacon for taking out this week’s 2XU Player of the Match.
The Northern Hawks took on the South East Suns in the 19&U’s, locking in another win for their stellar season 77-30. Goal Attack Sophie Sherriff was on fire, scoring 45 goals from 47 attempts. For this dominant display, Sophie was our 19&U Hot Shot of the round.
The Northern Hawks Opens currently sit in third on the ladder, and used the match against the Suns to build confidence ahead of their must win match up against Cripps in the semi-finals. The Hawks built their lead quarter by quarter to eventually take the win 59-28.
In a battle of 5th and 6th, Karana kept with the Cavaliers for the first half but a little less impact on the scoreboard in the third, to eventually give the Cavs, last year premiers, their last win of the season, 53-43.
In the Opens, the Cavaliers didn’t take their foot of the pedal despite their lossless season, beating Karana 90-15. After dominating the whole season, Cavaliers Goals Shooter Hayley McDougall left her best performance for the last round. Hayley put up 76 shots on goal and scored every single one of them. As a team, the Cav’s shot at a 99% accuracy this week, scoring 90 from 91. Congratulations Hayley for once again claiming the Hot Shot of the round for Opens.
