The netball community in the State’s North will have a new home, with a Northern Netball Hub set to be delivered as part of the Northern Suburbs Community Hub project. The Netball Hub will deliver a long-awaited indoor facility for Launceston’s netball community. The new facility will provide four dedicated indoor netball courts and other amenities including change rooms and equipment storage. The Netball Hub will also provide more opportunities for Launceston to host events such as Junior National Championships.
“Netball Tasmania and the entire northern netball community are absolutely thrilled with this announcement from the Tasmanian Government to establish the Northern Netball Hub. Launceston has always been a netball stronghold and continues to produce some of the finest netball athletes in this state.
The development of this facility will not only cater for local competitions run by the Northern Tasmanian Netball Association (NTNA) but will also serve as a northern base for Netball Tasmania’s high-performance programs to ensure our athletes have the very best facilities to train and prepare in for national level competitions”, Netball Tasmania CEO Mitch Coulson said.
The Northern Suburbs Community Hub will also include three additional multi-use indoor courts for Basketball, Volleyball and other sports, and a designated gymnastics area, rock climbing, weightlifting and boxing facilities, an outdoor activity area, café and spectator seating, change rooms, offices, meeting room and administration facilities, and onsite parking.
More than just a sporting facility, it will also provide fun, recreational opportunities for local people and a place to connect with others and local organisations. It will deliver programs for young people and the local community, and provide employment, mentoring and personal development opportunities for young Tasmanians.
A suitable contractor is being sought to undertake early works that will get the site ready for the full development. The early works are expected to be underway in August while work continues with the key stakeholders to finalise the design for the new multi-purpose facility. A main works tender package is expected later in the year with construction to start in early 2024 and be finished by mid-2025.
