Communities across Australia are celebrating National Volunteer Week this week, recognising the time and work put in by individuals into their passions. Without our volunteer's, sport would cease to exist as we know it and Netball Tasmania are forever grateful for the countless hours poured into our teams, clubs and associations.
To celebrate this week, we would like to share the stories of some of our volunteers and highlight the incredible work they do.
Clarissa M
Secretary, Kingborough Netball Association
I have been involved in netball since I was 10 years old. Given my playing days are now over, I wanted to give back to a sport that has been a huge part of my life over the years. I started by volunteering for a local club, arrange umpires. I am currently the Secretary for my local association, the Team Manager for my local state league team, and, for me the ultimate volunteer role, the Team Manager for our State 17s team. In volunteering in these roles, my aim is simple, to help as many people as I can enjoy the sport of netball.
Ashley F
Coach and Umpire, Gee Tees Netball Club
I’ve been proudly coaching and umpiring netball across Tasmania for the past 21 years. From grassroots NetSetGO teams to high-level senior state league squads, I’ve dedicated myself to developing players and promoting the sport I love. My journey has taken me across communities, sharing my passion and experience with players of all ages and skill levels. Whether it’s guiding young beginners or supporting elite athletes, I’m committed to fostering teamwork, discipline, and a love for the game. Netball has shaped much of my life, and I’m proud to have contributed to its growth throughout the state.
Ann P
President, George Town Saints Netball Association
I volunteer for a couple of organisations
Hawks and Saints! I am the Team Manager for 19&U State league and also a committee member. I am President of GTSNA. I love volunteering for my community and have met most of my closet friends through my involvement with those clubs.
I have been involved for over 30 years in Tassie in numerous roles. The best part of being a volunteer is seeing young people develop and grow into wonderful human beings! Being a part of that is very rewarding!
Shane F
E.P.P.A Palena Netball Club (Panthers) and Tasmanian Men's & Mixed Netball Associations (Titans)
My journey with netball has been incredibly rewarding. I started by coaching club 7th grade & over time I took on more volunteer roles including coaching higher grades, sitting on committees and mentoring younger players/coaches. In recent years (since retiring as a men’s player) I have been involved with coaching in the men’s state environment; as well as coaching STNA representative teams, continuing coaching club teams and helping Netball Tasmania facilitate SSN and Sporting Schools coaching clinics. Volunteering has taught me leadership, patience, and the power of positivity. It’s been a fulfilling experience to contribute to the sport I love and make a difference in others' lives.
