In exciting news for the East Coast netball community, Dorset Council have recently announced they are they worthy recipients of a Play Our Way grant from the Australian Government. The grant program is designed to remove barriers, address discrimination and promote equality for women and girls to participate in sport and physical activity.
“Dorset Council will use the money to upgrade three key netball facilities across the municipality with upgrades planned to existing courts at Derby and Bridport as well as to the existing two Scottsdale courts in conjunction with construction of a third court.”
The North East Netball Association, located on the North East Coast, is one of the largest sporting associations in the region and is predominantly made up of female participants.
Dorset Council is one of 290 organisations around the nation selected to receive Play Our Way funding for new or modified facilities, and sport participation programs and much needed equipment for women and girls across a range of sports.
“The North Eastern Netball Association is thrilled to receive notification of this grant funding received by Dorset Council.
The funding will be used to undertake vital safety improvements to the court located in Derby including safety run off areas and surface repairs. The Bridport recreation ground currently has 2 courts, one sealed and one asphalt, with both courts to be resurfaced to an acceptable playing standard. The Scottsdale netball centre will have the existing courts resurfaced and the construction of a third court.
These works will not only improve the playing environment for athletes, but increase courts being available for competition games and give greater flexibility to the Association when preparing rosters, along with training facilities for relevant Clubs and local schools.
NENA thank all Clubs for participating in the Dorset Sports Facility Plan consultation process where these improvements were identified and then were able to be included in the now successful Play Our Way grant application submitted by Dorset Council.
NENA look forward to working with Dorset Council on this project.”
- Association President, Sarah Forsyth.
Congratulations to Dorset Council and the North Eastern Netball Association on this great achievement. The upgrades come at an opportune time to assist in the continued growth of netball on the North East of Tasmania.
