Tasmanian Magpies Confirm Coaches For 2020

Netball Tasmania and Collingwood Magpies are excited to announce their coaching staff for the 2020 Deakin University Australian Netball League.

Recent Tasmanian Netball Hall of Fame Inductee Jon Fletcher will head up the Tasmanian Magpies for their fourth season in the competition.

Fletcher was given the head coach position in the Tasmanian Magpies’ first year in the competition, having previously coached the Tasmanian Spirit as well as Western Sting. Fletcher is also a former National League Coach having coached the Hunter Jaegers in the SSN equivalent with current Magpies Netball Head Coach Rob Wright as his Assistant.

He is a well-regarded coach not only in Tasmania but within Australian netball. He was the first ever male coach in the National Netball League (now known as Super Netball) and also had a stint at the Australian Institute of Sport under former National Coach Gaye Teede.

Claire Dennis will return as Assistant Coach for a third season having been a part of the team’s gold and bronze medal success and will see her continuing to develop under the tutelage of Jon Fletcher.

Magpies Netball Coach Rob Wright, who collectively with his coaching staff will oversee the program, believes the two coaches put in place will drive success for the upcoming season.

“Jon has a wealth of coaching experience and is very good at tactical and technical skill development. Jon is able to invest equally in individual player development as well as overall team performance – a tough balance in which he does really well”, Wright said.

“It’s great to have Claire return for a third season. In terms of a coaching group this is a great match, the pair complement each other’s skills really well.

“The Tasmanian Magpies have always been strong contenders and I trust this panel will continue the success of the program.”

Fletcher has most recently been working with Netball Tasmania as the Coach Development Facilitator, developing, guiding and mentoring those coaches that have the potential to one day have similar success to his.

Trials will be held this month, with six Tasmanian athletes to be selected to combine with Magpies Netball training partners.
